A difference between a writer and an academic as a reader is that the writer and reader have different thoughts on who is controlling the text. The academic will feel that the writer is not important but what they get out of the text is the true meaning, on the other hand the writer wants the reader to understand what they were trying to get at when they wrote the text.

When I edited my response the first thing I did was re-read the reading assignment. After reading the assignment again I noticed that what I had originally wrote was not quite what Elbow thought was a difference between a writer and an academic.
